Adjectives — Grade 2

Adjectives are describing words. They tell us more about a noun (a person, place, animal, or thing).

What is an adjective?

Adjectives describe nouns. They answer questions like What kind? How many? or Which one?

Examples
  • blue sky, tall tree, three kittens, round ball
  • The mango is sweet. (sweet describes mango)
  • The pillow feels soft. (soft describes pillow)
Remember

One noun can have more than one adjective: a big red balloon.

Common describing groups

Looks

color: red, blue, green size: big, small, tiny shape: round, square

Taste/Smell

sweet sour spicy fragrant

Touch/Sound

soft rough loud quiet

Feelings

happy sad brave kind

Number

one two many few

Which one?

this that these those

Where do adjectives go?

Before the noun

two puppies, a brown leaf, a long rope

After a “be/feel/look” verb

The cake is tasty. The kitten looks sleepy. My hands feel cold.

Comparing words (Grade-2 friendly)

Comparative (2 things)
  • big ? bigger (Use than) — “My bag is bigger than yours.”
  • tall ? taller
  • more beautiful (for long words)
Superlative (3 or more)
  • big ? biggest
  • tall ? tallest
  • most beautiful
Irregular you’ll meet early

good ? better ? best, bad ? worse ? worst

Easy order tip

Use this simple order when you have more than one adjective:

Opinion ? Size ? Color ? Noun

Example: a lovely small blue bird (opinion “lovely” + size “small” + color “blue” + noun “bird”)

Common mistakes (and quick fixes)

Double comparing ?

more better, most fastest

Say: better (not “more better”); fastest (not “most fastest”).

Forgetting “than” in comparatives ?

“This box is bigger you.” ? This box is bigger than yours.

Using very with superlatives ?

“This is very best toy.” ? “This is the best toy.”

Mixing -er with more ?

“more taller” ? taller or “more beautiful” (not “beautifuller”).

Choosing a/an before adjectives

Use an before a vowel sound: an orange umbrella, an excellent idea.
Use a before a consonant sound: a red apple.

Adjective vs. adverb

“He runs quick.” ? He runs quickly.
But: “He is a quick runner.” (adjective before noun)

Try it (mini practice)

Circle the adjectives

The happy puppy found a tiny bone.

The blue kite flew in the windy sky.

Make it better

“This road is more longer.” ? Fix: “This road is longer.”

“It is very best cake.” ? Fix: “It is the best cake.”
