Common Noun
A noun is the name of a person, place or a thing. It is regarded as certain referring to a person, place or a thing.

Above are all names given to a person so as to differentiate among individuals. | Above are all names given to different places. | Above are all names given to things that surround us. |
Common Noun:
It is the common name given to each individual of a particular type. E.g. My name is Ram. Ram is a proper noun here. But I am human. Human is the common name given to each individual of my type, so human is a common noun. Other examples of common noun are cow, dog, elephant, student etc.
Example:
The birds were sitting on the tree.
The dog was barking.
