Three states of matter

We must know the definition of the matter before discussing the topic. Anything that occupies space and has mass is called matter.

Matter exists in three different states i.e Solid, Liquid and Gas.

A solid has the following properties:

1. It has a definite shape.

2. It has a definite mass.

3. It has a definite volume.

A solid always looks the same and occupies the same space. It can not change its shape on its own. For example, a wooden box, a car, a stone, a book, etc all are solids.

A liquid has the following properties:

1. It does not have a definite shape.

2. It has a definite mass.

3. It has a definite volume.

The liquid will always take up the same amount of space and can take the shape of the container in which it is placed. For example- Water, milk, juice, etc all are the liquids.

Gas has the  following properties-

1. It does not have a definite shape.

2. It does not have a definite mass.

3. It does not have a definite volume.

The gas does not always weigh the same or take up the same amount of space but it can take the shape of the contaer in which it has been placed just like the liquids. For example- Oxygen in the air, helium in the balloon,  carbon dioxide in the air, etc all are the gases.
