Eclipse
You must have come across an astronomical happening by yourself so many times which is known as Eclipse. It occurs when one heavenly body obstructs the flow of light and causes the light being thrown upon another body -obscured. We know that the moon has a smaller size than the Earth and the Earth is very smaller in size when compared to the Sun. There are two types of eclipses that can be witnessed from the Earth- Solar eclipse and lunar eclipse. Both the eclipse occurs due to the different arrangements of the Earth, the Sun and the Moon.
Let us discuss both the type of eclipses properly-
Solar Eclipse- When the Moon, while revolving around the Earth aligns itself between the Sun and the Earth, then a particular region of the Earth experience the condition called the penumbra. That part witness the shadow formed over the Sun and a ring-type structure is formed as shown in the picture below. Other parts of the Earth which do not belong to this penumbra region can see the Sun with an easily. Solar Eclipse could be total or partial, it depends on the position of the three heavenly bodies.
Lunar Eclipse- When the Earth while revolving around the sun aligns itself such that, it acquires center position between the Sun and the Moon, it causes the Moon to undergo partial or sometimes total blackout due to the shadow being formed over it from the Earth, causing it to fade away. Sometimes the moon may also look orange-red during the eclipse as the colors absorbed by the atmosphere of the Earth are reflected by the Moon.
